We know it might seem daunting to think about converting your garden or lawn into a native oasis, but we are here to offer some tips so it can feel more attainable.
- Start small. You don’t have to rip out every non-native plant or start smothering all your grass right away. Add some Black eyed Susan or agastache to your already established garden bed.
- If you do want to convert a large area, try the smothering method. Find a spot on your lawn that needs some love (because we know that drought + grubs means most lawns have a few spots like that), and lay some cardboard over it. Cover the cardboard with some mulch, and either wait a little while to really smother out the vegetation underneath or be impatient like us and cut some holes in the cardboard to plant your native flowers grasses right away!
- If you don’t want to go out and pay for a ton of new plants, post on Facebook in the Buy Nothing page, in the Altlawns group, or heck, even email us! Most native plants are great self seeders and native gardeners are always happy to share the native love, whether with seedlings or seeds!
